I am kind of a research nerd, especially when it comes to mental health, relationships, sex, intimacy, chronic pain, attachment, depression, anxiety, the importance of human connection, how the brain works, and how to find really good help for whatever you are going through. Maybe this is your first time trying out therapy, or you might have been here before. No matter the circumstance, it's pretty normal to feel a little worried about how counseling is going to go, what's going to happen, and how and when you might start to feel better. Here are some answers for you:
After reaching out I will get in touch with you to set up a time for a free 15 minute phone consultation. During that call you can let me know a little bit about what's going on, and why you are looking to get in and see me for a counseling session. If it makes sense, we can decide on a time and date for a session and I will email you additional paperwork to fill out for your first session. Please note: while all the forms for consent and intake are HIPAA compliant and are delivered to you in a secure way, email and phone messages are NOT HIPAA compliant - please use phone and email as a way to schedule and contact me, but be mindful that I cannot offer complete security for any details you leave me in such messages.
I offer in-person appointments in Dripping Springs TX. Additionally telehealth appointments are always available and I have a secured platform through which to conduct virtual video sessions.
During our first session I usually go over my practice policies, confidentiality, how to get in contact with me, and general session procedures, and then we spend some time getting clear on what your goals are for counseling. This process usually involves me asking you questions about what the issues or challenges are that you have been facing and want to fix. I also have time for you to ask me a few questions too.
Most of my sessions are either 60 or 90 minute sessions. Most couples find that 90 minute sessions are better suited for them, and individual/solo sessions are helpful in either 60 or 90 minute increments. Occasionally a client(or couple) finds they would like to take a little more time and schedule a session longer. I am happy to accommodate that - please let me know so we can discuss time and pricing.
This is a great question! Coming to counseling can feel like a relief, almost immediately. It feels really good to have a comfortable, confidential person to talk to about what's really bothering you. Sometimes sessions can bring up really hard, stressful, complex problems, and it's normal to feel a little worn out after a session. Part of the work is noticing the stories and patterns we tell ourselves that keep us trapped. As we unlock these story's true meaning and you begin to perceive your own unhelpful patterns of interaction with others and yourself, you will be empowered to see and choose differently, developing a calmer confidence in your relationship with yourself and others. I try and check in with you at the end of most sessions to see if we are on track, aligning with your initial goals for counseling, uncovering old patterns or re-writing life stories. *I may NOT be a good fit for you, and that's okay! I strive to help all people find the absolute best help and care for their particular challenge and situation - I can make some suggestions on who might be a better fit for you and pass along their information.
